The Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx

Well, it was a nice run…..

The Dodgers begin the National League Championship Series tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies.

It’s too bad the Dodgers won’t be moving on to the World Series.  They’re going to lose to the Phillies because they’ve been jinxed!

In case you haven’t heard of it before, the Sports Illustrated cover is the kiss of death to teams and athletes.  Sports Illustrated even discusses it on their own website:  That Old Black Magic

Want some recent examples?

I’m sure Cubs fans cringed when they saw this Sports Illustrated cover two weeks ago:

And Patriot fans, I’m sure, didn’t appreciate Tom Brady appearing on the NFL Preview cover:

(For you non-sports fans:  The Cubs were knocked out of the playoffs by the Dodgers and Tom Brady suffered a season-ending injury on Opening Week of the NFL season.)

So, not only do the Dodgers have to overcome the powerful Phillies team, they’ll also have to break a 50+ year curse that is the Sports Illustrated cover.  It’ll be a miracle if they can pull it off.

Angels Fall Short Again

Once again the Angels make it to the playoffs and lose in the opening round to the Red Sox. Angel fans have got to be taking this very hard. The Angels were the best team in the American League all year - they set a team record with 100 wins this season - but now it’s all over.

What’s especially bad for Angel fans is the fact that the hated Dodgers have advanced to the next round.  The Dodgers who wouldn’t have even made it to the playoffs if they played in any other division in the league. It hurts to be an Angel fan tonight.

I’m unlike most L.A. baseball fans, since I root for both the Dodgers and Angels, which is sacreligious in these parts.

Maybe the Angels can loan the Dodgers their Rally Monkey for the rest of the playoffs.  Do you think that’s asking too much?

Go Dodgers!

Go Dodgers!

Vice Presidential Debate vs. The Dodger Game? No-Brainer

I must admit that I didn’t watch the debate.

To me, it doesn’t matter which one becomes the Vice-President because I wouldn’t want either one of them to become President. Does that make sense?  Probably not.

Anyway, I already know who I’m voting for.  The debate tonight was not going to change my mind.

I don’t think I’m going to share who I’m voting for here before the election because I don’t want to alienate anyone or turn anyone off.  I don’t know if it would or not because I see others openly supporting Obama or McCain and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest or keep me away from their blog because I’m not voting for who they’re voting for.

Anyway, I’ll support whoever wins the election in November and hope they do a great job.  I’m beyond sick of all the partisanship and the do-nothingness of our government while things are falling apart all around us.  It’s time we all start working together, right?

But this silly little blog is not going to be about serious stuff like elections and politics and war.  It’s all about Babito stories and daily life and interviews. I want to keep it fun here.

Plus, the Dodgers were playing tonight!  What about those Dodgers?!?  In the last two days they’ve won twice as many playoff games as they have in the last 20 years combined.  Now we just need the Angels to start winning so we can finally have a Freeway World Series.

And I need The Babito to be able to sit through more than 5 minutes of a game without asking me to put Barney on, because if he asks, then Barney it is.

Too bad we don’t all live in a Barney world:

Odds and Ends

  • Is it just me or are college football games so much more fun to watch than NFL games?  Maybe it’s just that we don’t have a team in L.A., and I don’t really have a favorite team anymore.  I used to be a major Rams fan, but those days are over.  The Chargers-Broncos game was fun to watch.  The Chargers got completely screwed on that late fumble call.  They should have won the game, but now they’re 0-2.
  • I love the new Genius feature on iTunes.  Genius creates a custom playlist for you based on a single song of your choice.  You pick the song and Genius finds other songs that go well with that song.  You can pick 25, 50, 75, or 100 song playlists.  These custom playlists also help you discover songs you didn’t even remember you had on iTunes and also help you rediscover songs you haven’t listened to in a while.
  • Did you hear about the girl who’s auctioning off her virginity to help pay for her masters degree?  She’s hoping the bidding reaches $1 million.  If she gets that much they’ll be a lot of poor guys waiting a little longer to lose theirs.  The story, including a picture of the girl, is HERE.
  • Lastly, on a very serious note, my heart and prayers go out to the people (and their families) who were involved in that terrible Metrolink accident in L.A. on Friday.  I ride the Metrolink to work most days (on a different route) and I can’t imagine the horror they went through.  Stories coming out today say that the engineer driving the train may have been sending text messages (to a group of teenagers he befriended?) just a minute or two before the trains collided.  Despite a little trepidation, I’ll be back on the train tomorrow.  I’m curious to see if ridership is down because of this accident.
  • In case you care, you can follow my mindless drivel (and also be updated when I post something new here) on Twitter.
