Daddy Dan’s 2009 Bookworm Challenge

I was reading an article in the Wall Street Journal, an op-ed by Karl Rove, talking about how he and President Bush have an annual contest to see who can read the most books. I thought it sounded like a really fun idea, so I’ve decided to start a 2009 book-reading contest here at Daddy Dan.

So, who’s up for it? I can keep track of everyone’s reading list here, and I’ll set up a special page where everyone can keep up with how everyone else is doing.

While the contest is just for fun, we’ll still need some ground rules:

• I’ll keep track of both number of books read and number of pages read. The number of pages read will be based on what the book’s Amazon.com page says.

• Text books and magazines are ineligible.

• You can read the same book more than once, but it will only count once in your score.

Any other rules you think I should add?

It would also be fun to have prizes for the winners. I’ll start it off with a $25 Amazon.com gift card. If you’d like to donate an additional prize, please let me know!

Please let me know in the comments or send me an e-mail at danthedaddy@gmail.com if you’re considering participating. Once I get a list of people (and get your feedback on the rules) I’ll send out an e-mail with the official rules.

Back to Reality

Back to work today. I’m sitting on the train as I write this on my brand-spanking-new iPhone. My wife and I got each other one for Christmas, and so far I’m loving it. And what did you all get for Christmas?

Babito had a fantastic Christmas. It was so much fun spending two solid weeks at home with him. Santa brought him his kitchen, he got tons of presents from his Papa and Nana, including a Cozy Coupe and a scooter, and a trampoline from his Nino and Nina.

Last night, as I was getting him ready for bed, I told him that tomorrow he gets to go see all his friends at daycare and he immediately burst into tears. He said “Please don’t go to work Daddy! I want to stay home with Mommy and Daddy!”

He was inconsolable. I finally got him to calm down by listing all the fun things he does at daycare, but it broke my heart how sad he seemed.

In other news, it’s time to announce the winner of the contest! The winner is Astrogirl! Thanks to all that entered. There will more contests here at Daddy Dan in 2009, so stay tuned!

Happy New Year!

Help Me Write a Book – Win a Prize!

I’m seriously considering writing a book.

It’s definitely going to be a novel, and I have the basic storyline for it so far.  One part of the book involves time travel, and the main character gets to choose whether or not to travel back in time, but he only gets to do it once, not like the ‘Back to the Future’ time travelling where they can go back and forth all willy-nilly over and over again.

That’s where you all, my dear readers, come in.  I need some ideas on how the option of time travel comes into the story.  I don’t want the time travel to be something that’s been invented by some scientist.  It can’t be offered by an alien.  I’d prefer it not come about from an angel or God.  It has to be something more mystical.

I don’t want to give away too much of the book’s story yet, but the time travel offer will most likely come in immediately or shortly after a great personal tragedy.

Of course, sending me your idea is completely voluntary and non-compensating.  If I use your idea in any manner I’ll thank you in the book and invite you to the movie premiere.

Even more importantly, the best idea I receive in the comments by Monday, December 22nd, will win a $25 dollar gift card from Amazon.com.

I’ve also started another blog that will deal exclusively with the book writing process.  It’s at TimeTravelBook.wordpress.com.  Have I gone insane?  Yes.

Thanks, and Good Luck!
