Today I volunteered to work at our church’s annual Harvest Festival. I’ve actually volunteered every year since 2002 except for 2006, when the festival was held a few days after The Babito was born. Catholic church harvest festivals are the best because their two biggest draws, besides the carnival rides, are alcohol and gambling.
Every year I work in the Bingo tent. Have you ever worked at a Bingo event? The volunteers’ job is to walk around and sell tickets for each game. It’s fun, but there are some crazy people. There are always some people that want you to give them the ticket from the bottom of the stack, there are others that want to pick their own ticket from your stack, and then there’s others that don’t want to buy tickets from certain volunteers. They seriously believe that some volunteers are lucky and some are unlucky.
Today there was a Filipino couple in the tent that thought I was the lucky seller. They had to buy their ticket from me every game, and they were playing the whole three hours I was working. They never did win a game, but, like one of the other volunteers said, “Only you could attract bingo groupies.”
