Annual Pass Junkies

We now have annual passes to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, The San Diego Zoo, The San Diego Wild Animal Park, and the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Yes, we’re annual passes junkies.  We are by no means rich, but the annual pass deals are simply too good to pass up.  You can get some really great deals at the amusement parks in Southern California.

Disneyland

disneyland

Our one splurge is our Disneyland annual passes.  We have the best passes available, the premium pass.  These passes have no blackout days and come with free parking.  We get the premium passes for Disneyland because we like to go on the weekends and don’t want to be unable to go whenever we get the urge.  These are the one passes we have that aren’t a bargain.  I think they’re about $400 each, but they’ve definitely been worth it.  They have passes that are much less expensive, but you have blackout days where your passes are invalid.

We’ve gone at least once a month, usually more than once a month.  I think we went to Disneyland about 20 times last year, so it really does end up being a bargain if you do the math.  If we did go 20 times, the cost per visit is about $20 each, plus we get free parking and good discounts on food and souvenirs.

It’s great to be able to just go over for the evening and ride a few rides and watch the great firework show.  It’s really our favorite thing to do with the Babito, and of course he absolutely loves Disneyland.

Knott’s Berry Farm

knotts

Earlier this summer, my uncle and cousins were here from back east and we went with them to Disneyland, Sea World, and Knott’s Berry Farm.  We didn’t have annual passes for Knott’s, and didn’t really ever even think about getting them, but when we saw how cheap they were, it made sense.  Annual passes to Knott’s are only $79, and they come with discounts on food and souvenirs, and free parking.  If you only go twice the entire year the passes are worth it. For $99 a year, you can get the annual pass for both Knott’s and their water park, Soak City.

Babito really likes Knott’s Berry Farm.  They have a great kid’s area (Camp Snoopy), and he really likes riding the log ride and the mine train.  They also have a great fried chicken restaurant (which started the whole park).  Babito will like Knott’s even more when he gets a little bigger and can ride all the roller coasters at Knott’s.

San Diego Zoo/Wild Animal Park

sdzoo

The World Famous San Diego Zoo has a fantastic annual pass.  For just $84 you get two adult annual passes to both the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park.  Regular one-day tickets to the zoo are $33, so you can see what a great deal it is.  You also get two guest passes for each park with your annual pass and other discounts.  You can buy annual passes for your kids for just $28 or $32 a year, depending on their age.  Kids 2 and under get in free.

Both the zoo and animal park are top-notch.

Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

arboretum

My wife also bought us annual passes to the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.  I’ve yet to go, but my wife, her mom, and the Babito have been several times.  It’s a beautiful place, as you can see if you click on the link above.  The annual passes are $70 for two adults and your kids.  It’s a nice place to get away from the city.

So, to wrap it up, we have access to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, The San Diego Zoo, The San Diego Wild Animal Park, and the Arboretum for an entire year, whenever we feel like stopping by, for a little more than $1,000 a year, and most of that cost is just for Disneyland.  All of these places are great family places, and we always love taking The Babito and spending a day, or just a few hours, in some of his favorite places.

Disneyland Tips For Toddlers: Part 4 (Shows and Attractions)

The Disneyland Resort has a great selection of fun shows and attractions that toddlers will love. If your toddler is like the Babito and loves music, there are also many small musical acts throughout the resort that always draw his attention. There’s also some meet and greets where you can get a picture with your favorite characters.

Let’s review some of the best shows and attractions for toddlers:

1. Celebrate: A Street Party!

celebrate

In place of the usual parade, Disneyland is running ‘Celebrate: A Street Party’ which is really very similar to a parade.  The Street Party makes several stops and performs a 15 minute show along the normal parade route. Many of the most popular Disney characters take part and your child is also invited out onto the street to do “The Twist” and take part in a big conga line. There’s two Street Parties daily, usually at 3:30 and 6:30. The Babito loves it.

2. Pixar Play Parade

The Pixar Play Parade takes place at California Adventure daily at 5:15pm. It features all of your toddler’s favorite Pixar characters from movies such as Toy Story, Cars, A Bug’s Life, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, and The Incredibles. What makes the parade even more fun is that the characters and floats shoot water at the parade viewers, which is great on hot days. Just be careful to protect your camera!

3. Disney’s Electrical Parade

A long-time favorite, Disney’s Electrical Parade is still an amazing parade. And you have to love the music! The Electrical Parade takes place every evening at California Adventure. Don’t miss it!

4. Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage

playhouse 3

Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage takes place in California Adventure several times a day. It’s a stage show featuring the characters from several Disney Channel shows, including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, and Little Einsteins. The show is indoors. There are no seats. You sit on a carpeted floor to catch the 20 minute show. It’s an interactive show that toddlers love, and it gets you out of the hot sun and into air conditioning for a while.

5. Magical Fireworks

Disneyland is currently featuring “Magical,” a new fireworks show that features both Tinkerbell and Dumbo flying high above Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. You have to hand it to Disney, they put on the best fireworks shows around. The fireworks start at 9:25. Many people watch them from Main Street, which gets packed early. We prefer watching the fireworks from one of two places: 1) Fantasyland near the Dumbo ride or 2) The outdoor seating at Plaza Inn. Both of these places are much less crowded.

Here’s flying Dumbo:

6.  Character Meet and Greets

Babito meeting Pluto

There are several places to meet Disney characters.  The Disney Princesses have their own meet and greet area near It’s A Small World.  Be prepared to wait in a long (sometimes over an hour) line.  Outside the Pooh ride there is a meet and greet with Pooh, Tigger, and Eeyore.  The lines are usually quite long, but it’s the only place you can get a picture with these characters.  You can meet Mickey Mouse either on Main Street or at his house in ToonTown.  The ToonTown meet takes place at the end of the tour of the house.  You can usually find Goofy, Pluto, and Minnie Mouse either on Main Street or roaming around ToonTown.  Buzz Lightyear can often be found in Tomorrowland.  Woody and Jessie can often be spotted in Frontierland.  In addition to this, there are several other random characters roaming around the park.  You never know who you’ll run into.

Disneyland Tips For Toddlers: Part 3 (Hidden Gems)

Today I’m going to cover five hidden gems at Disneyland and California Adventure.  These are some areas that are not really well-known but are great for parents and toddlers.

1.  Disneyland Baby Care Center

bccbannerjpg

At the end of Main Street, on the right hand side behind the photo supply store, is a place we visit several times on every Disneyland trip.  It’s the Disneyland Baby Care Center.  I think of it as the VIP Lounge for babies and toddlers.

The center has everything a parent of a baby or toddler would ever need.  There are plush changing tables.  These tables are spacious, padded, and clean.  The changing room also features toddler-sized toilets for the newly potty-trained.

The center also offers bottle and baby food warming, nice high chairs to feed your baby.  A private room with rocking chairs for breastfeeding Mommies, and a small store to purchase items you may have forgotten or run out of, including diapers, baby food, formula, pacifiers, eipies, etc.

The Baby Care Center is a nice, clean place to take care of all your baby or toddler’s needs.

With the number of strollers you see at Disneyland, you’d think the Baby Care Center would be packed, but it NEVER is.  I don’t think too many people know about this great feature of Disneyland.

There’s also a baby care center in California Adventure back near the Mission Tortilla Factory.

2.  Animation Building (at California Adventure)

animation-building

The Animation Building in the Hollywood Backlot area of California Adventure is another great place to take your toddler, especially on hot summer days, since the building is nicely air-conditioned.  We often take the Babito in here to get him to take a nap.

The main room is filled with giant screens showing scenes from various classic Disney animated movies.  It’s very nicely put together.  There’s nice cushioned benches strewn throughout the room for you to relax while your baby or toddler takes a nap.

The Animation Building also features several toddler-friendly interactive activities, including Turtle Talk with Crush, where an animated Crush (from Finding Nemo) interacts with the audience.  There’s also an area where you can add your voice to Disney cartoons and an area where you can learn to draw your favorite Disney character.

3.  Redwood Creek Challenge Trail

bridge

Looking to get some of the pent-up energy out of your toddler.  There’s no better place at the Disneyland Resort than the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail at California Adventure.

Redwood Creek features trails, bridges, slides, caves, and various other fun things for your toddler to explore.  It’s a nice shady area to get away from the crowds for a while too.  For older children, Redwood Creek features a rock wall to climb and rope swings.

While visiting Redwood Creek, be sure to catch the Brother Bear show, which usually runs every hour.  It features two bear characters that are available after the show for pictures.

4.  Water Play Areas

California Adventure also features some great water play areas for small children.  It’s a great way for your kids (and you) to cool off on a hot summer day.

The first area is in Bugs Land.  The entire land is themed to make you feel like you’re as small as a bug.  The water play area features a giant water hose and nozzle that squirts water at unexpected times.  The kids love it.  I’d recommend bringing a change of clothes and a swim diaper.  There’s a family changing room nearby for your convenience.

The second area is in the Bountiful Valley Farm area.  This area features various farm-related water features.

5.  Disneyland Hotel

waterfalls

Lastly, wandering the grounds of the Disneyland Hotel is a great way to get away from the crowds.  The Disneyland Hotel has many fun things for toddlers to look at including an area featuring a wall of waterfalls that you can walk around and under.  Also, the grounds feature several bushes trimmed to look like Disney characters.  Lastly, there’s a pond where your small child can pilot a remote-controlled Jungle Cruise boat.

Of course, if you’re staying at one of the Disney hotels, each features a great pool area for registered guests only.
