Daddy Dan Interviews…..Jenn from Free and Flawed

Jenn from Free and Flawed (and also Must Love Geek) is an extremely talented, funny, and open writer.  She’s currently going to school to eventually become a medical examiner.  Meanwhile, she’s a Licensed Massage Therapist, aspiring author, and the latest Daddy Dan interviewee…

Daddy Dan:  Tell me a little about yourself.

Jenn: I’m part ninja, part trapeze artist. Or I’m a 24-year-old Chicagoan who does a little bit of this (freelance writing) and a little bit of that (assisting) while going to school and maintaining a pretty high level of awesomeness.

DD:  How long have you been blogging?

Jenn: I’ve had a LiveJournal since 2002-ish.  I’ve been at Wordpress for maybe a year and a half.

DD:  What got you started?

Jenn: My then boyfriend got me hooked on LiveJournal. When it came time to grow up and graduate to an adult platform, I chose to move to Wordpress.

DD:  Why do you continue blogging? What do you get out of it? How long do you think you’ll continue?

Jenn: I love writing. I write for myself. I write like I talk. I don’t pay much attention to the rules of writing. For me, it’s a fun way to get a lot of the thoughts swimming around my head, out. What do I get out of it? A lot! This past year has been full incredible experiences for me and I owe it all to blogging. I was invited to BlogHer as a live-blogger, I met some amazing people who are now some of my best friends. I’m able to review awesome new cell phones and I finally found a job doing something I love. I owe all of that to blogging. I feel rewarded every time someone comments or sends me an email thanking me for being so open or telling me how they relate to what I’m going through. Making these connections and developing relationships is the best part. I hope to continue this as long as my fingers allow!

DD:  Tell me a little about your blog.

Jenn: Freeandflawed started as a place for me to talk about Chicago-related news. It’s slowly evolved into what it is today. I’m very honest in my blog about many aspects of my life. I enjoy putting a humorous spin on not-so-funny situations and poking fun at myself. I also use Freeandflawed as a tool to recommend other bloggers and send them more traffic. Mustlovegeek is where I let my geeky side go wild. It’s probably the only themed blog I’ll ever have!

DD:  Why should people read your blog?

Jenn: Why not?! :P   I think this is something my readers would have to answer. I’m still blown away by how many people do read it as well as comment. I am incredibly humbled by their responses and feedback.

DD:  You posted a picture of your grandma drinking wine out of a sippy cup, what’s that all about? Is it a normal family thing?

Jenn: Oh yeah, we’re all a bunch of sippy-cupped drunks. That picture was taken the night my grandpa was admitted to the hospital. My grandma spent all day in the ER with him. She was pretty stressed. In hopes to relax her we gave her some wine. Because I’m oh so classy (or 11 years old) I thought it would be great to put it in a sippy cup and document the event for my blog.

DD:  What types of blogs do you enjoy reading? Can you provide a list of your five favorite blogs?

Jenn: I enjoy many different types of blogs, but I tend to gravitate toward those that I can relate to or learn something from. You probably won’t catch me reading about fishing or fashion (I can’t even dress myself!)

Some of my favorites include:

  • Surviving Myself
  • …and hijinks ensued
  • No Ordinary Rollercoaster
  • Quirkology
  • Everyday Adventures of Me in the City
  • DD:  Why do you like these five?

Jenn: Those five are just a handful of my favorites. I enjoy them so much because they are written by such talented, witty and creative people. Their posts are always engaging, entertaining and often times thought provoking. Quirkology is my guilty pleasure. She posts a lot of items I want to buy. She’s bad for my checking account!

DD:  What are your favorite “non-blogging” activities?

Jenn: I love to paint, whether it be walls, a dresser or on canvas. I haven’t picked up in a brush in a while. I just haven’t found the time. I’m also a bookworm. I’m usually reading three or four books at a time.

DD:  The cartoons you feature on your blog are pretty cool and unique. Do you draw them yourself? If so, where’d you learn to do that?

Jenn: Thank you! And yes, I do draw them myself. I’ve always enjoyed art, but I’m not sure that has anything to do with it. It has a lot to do with the manipulation of the line features in MS paint and how much patience one has.

DD:  What is the secret to happiness?

Jenn: IKEA or self-acceptance. Being able to say “I’m okay with me” is a big deal. So many of us spend our time breaking ourselves down, criticizing our looks, actions and failures. Too often we
want to be more like her or him and less like ourselves. I think it’s important to recognize ourselves as just human. We’re supposed to make mistakes. Be happy with you! I think IKEA may be the easier of the two.  :)

DD:  What is your favorite quote?

Jenn: “Anatomy is destiny.” – Sigmund Freud

DD:  What, so far, has been the happiness moment of your life?

Jenn: I think I’m experiencing the happiest period of my life right now.

DD:  What has been your biggest regret?

Jenn: I prefer to not have regrets. I think every decision, good or bad, has gotten me to where I am today. Every mistake has been followed up with a lesson learned. With every bruise, tear or cut I grew a bit stronger. I think I owe a lot of who I am to those things that would normally be considered regrets.

DD:  Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Jenn: Ideally I would like to be in medical school on my way to becoming a medical examiner. Realistically I will probably be finished with school. I’m not sure if I see myself getting that far. Writing would still be a big part of my life – both blogging and books. I’d hopefully be married and toying with the idea of kids if I didn’t have them already.

DD:  Do you monitor your blog stats?

Jenn: I sure do. I use various sites to do the dirty work for me. I’m curious who’s coming to check up on things. It also helps me block inappropriate comments, content thieves and watch ex-boyfriends.  :P

DD:  What are your five favorite places in the world?

Jenn: Chicago, any office supply store, Salem, MA, used bookstores and any ocean.

DD:  Since you live in Chicago: Are you a Cubs fan? If so, sorry about that 100 year streak thing. There’s always next year, right?

Jenn: I am a Cubs fan, which apparently makes me a masochist as well. Every time they’re doing well and end up getting into the Playoffs they all of a sudden start playing like shit. It’s an eff’in conspiracy I tell you!

DD:  What’s it like going to a game at Wrigley Field?

Jenn: I haven’t been to Wrigley Field in 40 years! Or more like 17ish. It’s one thing to watch the games on TV in the comfort of your own home, naked and eating frosting out of a can. It’s another to put up with drunks, spilled beer and peanut shells getting wedged between your flip flop and foot.

DD:  Are the Bears ever going to have an offense to go with that defense?

Jenn: One can dream!! I think our offense is better this year compared to last year. Sorry Rex! I’m not completely happy with the team though. Orton is doing a great job, but he’s not throwing down field enough. He really needs to hone those skills. If we can get some amazing passes and less flags, I’d be a happy camper. But if another game is lost with 11 seconds to spare, I might die.

DD:  What are five things you want to do before you die?

Jenn: Write a book and have it published, sky dive, learn another language, get married, travel to Italy.

DD:  Tell us something most people don’t know about you.

Jenn: I spend a lot of my time being afraid that I’m not good enough.

DD:  You’ve written about your great fear of toilets. Where do you think that all started, and have you sought help?

Jenn: Okay, this is all my mom’s fault. She always insisted I cover the toilet seat with toilet paper. (She’ll deny that, but this is my interview – get your own Mom.) As I got older she began telling me about her nightmares all involving toilets. I’ve seen my fair share of disgusting bathrooms. People are gross. Flushing must require a certain skill many don’t have. I know that the chances of me catching anything from them is rare, but that doesn’t make me any less afraid. It’s not so much the seat, but that small piece left uncovered where the seat splits. You know, the part where all the pubes and pee drops rest. I don’t want to see that. I also blame Candyman. Who puts bees in a toilet?!

DD:  Every week you post your favorite ‘Post Secret’ postcards. Have a secret you’d like to share here? Have you sent in a postcard?

Jenn: I’m sorry to say I don’t have a secret worth sharing at the moment! I did send in a secret once. I don’t think it was interesting enough because I never saw it online or in one of their books.

DD:  What Disney songs do you sing in the shower?

Jenn: I tend to stick to Little Mermaid songs. Particularly “Part of Your World.”

    DD:  Favorite Disney movie?

Jenn: The Little Mermaid, hands down.

DD:  What Disney character best describes you?

Jenn: Pocahantas. What? I could be an Indian girl who sings to trees with her best friend, a raccoon. I could be in love with a John Smith. You don’t know me!!!

DD:  What made you want to be a Licensed Massage Therapist? Do your hands hurt at the end of the day? Do you have incredibly strong Hulk-like hands now?

Jenn: Honestly, I began massage therapy school because I was bored. I dropped out of college because I felt I was wasting money while I tried to figure out what I was interested in. I eventually realized that I was utterly amazed by the human body and am now pursuing a degree in kinesiology. If I give too many massages or don’t stretch my arms, wrists and fingers beforehand, I tend to experience a little pain in those areas. I don’t think my hands are at the Hulk level just yet.

DD:  Last question:  Have you had the opportunity to utter “What a crazy, random happenstance” yet? If so, what happened?

Jenn: I did and that person just laughed. They had no idea where it was from. At first I thought, “Sweet, this person thinks I made that up. I must be awesome.” But Dr. Horrible is too good a series to pass up. Seriously, if you haven’t watched it yet, go do it. Now.

Daddy Dan Interviews…..Ashley from Clever Blog Name Here

Ashley and Chris - a lovely couple

It gets harder and harder to write these intros to the interviews without sounding repetitive.  Let me just say that Ashley at Clever Blog Name Here has a very entertaining blog, with funny stories about herself, her husband Chris, and their two dogs Chloe and Burrito.  Every post also comes with fabulous bonus photographs that help tell the story.  Did I mention Ashley is a professional photographer?  Check out her photography website and her photography blog.  The girl’s got talent, right?  Also, did I mention that she’s going to be doing a FREE photoshoot with The Babito?  I haven’t even mentioned that to HER yet!

Here’s my interview with Ashley, the fabulous, soon to be famous photographer.  You can all say someday that you “knew her when”:

DD: Tell me a little about yourself.

Ashley: Sure! Let’s see… I’m Ashley. I live in San Francisco, married to a hot sexy nerd, Chris, have 2 adorable puppy-dawgs, Mr. Burrito and Miss Chloe. I’m a photographer, totally obsessed with my iphone… I like cheeze-its and swimming in the ocean… but not at the same time or anything.

DD: How long have you been blogging?

    Ashley: I started blogging December 3, 2007

    DD: What got you started?

Ashley: I was pretty much in love with this girl and her blog.

    She’s my bloggy-inspiration.

DD: Why do you continue blogging?

Ashley: I’ve met the most amazing people and formed wonderful friendships through blogging. I love the support and encouragement, I love not feeling alone… and I love looking back at my old posts to remember where I was and/or how far I’ve come. Chris always jokes with me when he sees me with my computer laughing… “What are you doing? Reading your own blog again?” It’s sad, I’m retarded. Whatever.

DD: How long do you think you’ll continue?

Ashley: As long as it is still fun.

DD: Tell me a little about your blog.

Ashley: It is a blog about my life… all aspects of it. There’s a lot of post about my dogs and hubby, a lot of my professional work as a photographer, and a lot of “this is what I did today… errr err. doobie-do, blah.” type of thing. I also love a good recipe now and then. I’m fairly sarcastic, I do drop the F-bomb from time to time, and I never, NEVER, post without at least one photo, it’s a rule, I’m a visual person, people!

DD: Why should people read your blog?

Ashley: People should read my blog because….. dang. That’s a hard one. I dunno, because I have cute dogs?

DD: What types of blogs do you enjoy reading?

Ashley: I love reading blogs that make me laugh or where the author is totally candid and real. I also love if they include photos of their life.. I feel more of an emotional connection to them or something if I can see a picture of what they look like, or what their house looks like.. or maybe I’m just a creepy stalker, mmmmmmmmmwwwwhahahha… I also enjoy a good photo blog for inspiration.

DD: Can you provide a list of your five favorite blogs?

Ashley: Oh Daddy Dan, How about: Can I provide a list of 5 blogs I love and think other people should read?

Why Yes, Daddy Dan. I can!

If I were to stalk someone, like REALLY stalk them, it would be her… but don’t worry I wont. But I will read her blog, and look at her flickr, A LOT: Wishcake

I am her possum: Fabulously out there

She is so much fun, I want a mini version of her to carry around in my pocket and talk to when no one is looking: Steph

She wins the award for the world’s biggest heart, and she has a killer fashion style.. and I want her bangs: Sarah Marie P

Her love inspires me and her puppies make me giggle: Things I Carry

He interviews people, and I like that shit. And he’s funny: Daddy Dan

    DD: Finally! A brown-noser!

DD: What are your favorite “non-blogging” activities?

Ashley: Photography, cooking, being with my hunny buns and our furry childrens. Hiking, attempting to learn how to play piano. Oh, and I also love to travel and eat ice cream.

DD: How did you get into photography?

Ashley: It is always something I have been interested in. My father was a photographer, and I think secretly I’ve always wanted to be like him. I didn’t get serious about it until I won my first digital SLR in an online give-a-way. heck yeah!

DD: Where did you learn to take such amazing photos?

Ashley: Well, hey, first of all, thanks! A lot of trial and error, a few online tutorials, and constantly being inspired by my photography heroes.

DD: Any tips for a newbie like me? Any simple tricks you could share?

Ashley: Get an SLR and learn your camera. So many people have really nice cameras but only shoot on the auto settings. Learn about your shutter speed and aperture, and play around with your ISO. Now that we don’t HAVE to pay for film and developing there isn’t any reason why not to play around and figure things out. The worst that can happen is you’ll trash 10,000 digital files of crap photos.. I think we can handle that. As for simple tricks, I love shooting with the sun behind my subject rather than directly on them.

DD: You just started doing photography full-time. What gave you the confidence to take this big step?

Ashley: My husband. He is amazing and my biggest fan offering unlimited mounds of support….. aaaand when I realized I was making more money doing photography than I was at my regular full time job…. that was sort of the kick I needed to say, “ok, you can do this, miss crazy. So do it!”

DD: How has it gone so far?

Ashley: It has been incredible so far! I’ve been really busy. I can only hope it stays this way. I’ve been so lucky to have really great referrals and it’s kept the momentum going. Great, now I’ve probably jinxed it. Thanks a lot Daddy Dan ;)

DD: Where do you get most of your customers from?

Ashley: I continue to post ads on craigslist.org. I’ve had really great luck with that website. People in San Francisco really love and use craigslist a lot. I post an ad every week or so. Most of my business comes from referrals though, so I’ll get a job off craigslist and that one job will turn into 3 referrals.

DD: When are you available for a photo shoot with The Babito?

Ashley: Now! I would love, LOVE, to do a Babito photoshoot. Ok, maybe not right now.. but I am coming down to LA to work for a week late October early November because I have a few sessions set up down there, so, serious, we should do it, and hook me up with your other IE friends that need some photos, yo!

DD: I’ll have to check the Babito’s calendar, but it sounds great!

DD: How did you come up with the name Burrito for your English bulldog?

Ashley: Ohhhhhhhh Burrito! He is famous. Really, people twitter about him and stuff! Like people that don’t know him in real life! It’s adorable. I don’t exactly remember the Burrito naming story.. it was 4 or 5 years ago and Chris and I decided that we really wanted an English Bulldog. It was neck and neck between Burrito or Sausage because English Bulldogs sort of look like those two food items. Somehow we decided on Burrito and he was our imaginary dream dog for years. We would talk about him as if he already existed and stuff, really creepy. When we were financially ready to get one we knew we found the right dog when we saw the little “bean” marking on the top of his head. Bean….. Burrito… Get it? Yeeeeeeaaaaaah, we crack ourselves up!

    Burrito!

    Burrito!

DD: What is the secret to happiness?

Ashley: Not taking yourself too seriously, but just seriously enough.

DD: What is your favorite quote?

Ashley: “When someone hands you a flyer, it’s like they’re saying here you throw this away.” Mitch Hedberg

DD: What, so far, has been the happiness moment of your life?

Ashley: I think marrying my best friend tops the charts… and the night and 2 weeks in Tahiti and Hawaii that followed…

DD: What has been your biggest regret?

Ashley: I don’t believe in regret.. only in opportunities to learn from our mistakes.

DD: Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Ashley: Hopefully happy… with Chris, a kid, a thriving business, and a killer house with a bad ass kitchen.

A Nicer Picture of Chris and Ashley

A Nicer Picture of Chris and Ashley

DD: Do you monitor your blog stats?

Ashley: I do. Google analytics, baby. I get on average 180-200 visitors per day to my personal blog and 50 to the photo blog.

DD: What are your five favorite places in the world?

    Ashley: So far…

    1.) Ko Samui, Thailand
    2.) Florence, Italy
    3.) Oahu, Hawaii
    4.) Paris, France
    5.) My bed, Home

DD: What are five things you want to do before you die?

    Ashley:

1.) Travel to all of the places on my “must travel to before I die” list
2.) Have a photo I’ve taken published on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine
3.) Celebrate my 50th wedding anniversary
4.) Volunteer in a foreign country
5.) Live in and own a house on the beach

DD: Tell us something most people don’t know about you.

Ashley: I’m self-conscious of my nonexistent top lip and I’m a bacon vegetarian, which means I don’t eat any meat, except for bacon.. why you ask? Because it is bacon and it is freakin’ good. ‘nuf said.

DD: The desert island question: If you could only have one of each of the following with you, what would you have:

    Ashley:

    Book: A really long one.
    Movie: Office Space
TV show: Survivor Man.. not that I like that show or anything, but I think it may come in handy on a desert island, no?
Album: Right now it’d be Kings of Leon, but if I only had one album for the rest of my life I might get sick of that… hmmm. Better play it safe and say something Tom Petty or Queen. Yeah! Something Tom Petty.

DD: Were you absolutely stumped when you were trying to think of a blog title or did you purposely chose “Clever Blog Name Here”?

Ashley: I was really truly stumped! It’s so hard to try to name a blog… especially one that is about such random things. I put Clever Blog Name Here in there as a “working title” with every intention of changing it once I thought of something, well, clever, but now I think it kind of fits… or maybe I just still haven’t thought of anything clever enough…

Ashley: Now Daddy Dan, I have a question for you to include in my interview! What’s with you and the interviews? I love them, keep ‘em coming! I think they are fun and I adore being introduced to new bloggers, but I’m curious as to what got you started.

A few weeks ago after you interviewed my cool friend, Sarah from Sensibly Sassy, I browsed your archives to see if I could find the missing link between you and your mysterious interviews…. Maybe a secret confession of a long lost dream to be a reporter or some kind of journalist… but no, nothing!

So Daddy Dan, enlighten us.. why interview? As my friend Sara Marie P from Sarah Said says, “We MUST know!”

DD:  You ARE a stalker!!!  ;-)

To be completely honest, I went through a period where I was completely stumped for something to write about, and I thought it’d be something fun to do.  I needed material!!!  I didn’t plan on making it such a long-term series, and it may be running its course.  I’ll continue them going forward, probably on a less regular basis.  As some of you know, I have a new series that will be debuting in the next few weeks that I’m pretty excited about.

ALSO:  Don’t miss all of the other great interviews, including:

Daddy Dan Interviews…..Jenna from Learning As I Go

Jenna, from Learning As I Go, is a true Mommy blogger.  Most of her posts deal with her two adorable daughters, Beatrice and Olivia.  It’s worth checking out her site for the cute pictures alone.
But you should also go to Learning As I Go because Jenna is a very honest, open, and talented writer.  She shares all the ups and downs of parenthood, and you’ll definitely learn some things from her.  Also, she’s in the midst of going through the Terrible Two stage with her youngest daughter, Olivia, and since The Babito is just entering that stage I like to check in and see what we have in store for us in the coming year.  Also, did I mention she has two really cute little girls?
Here’s my interview with Jenna from Learning As I Go:

Daddy Dan (DD):  Tell me a little about yourself.

Jenna: I’m Jenna. I married my college sweetheart, Josh, back in May 2001. We have two daughters – Beatrice 3, and Olivia, 2 – who are thirteen months apart. I work outside the home, too. My life is full with raising two daughters and working full time. I think I might be the master of juggling. It’s possible that I am also the master of having no patience.

DD:  How long have you been blogging?

Jenna: I started a blog back in 2004 when I was pregnant with Bea. It was pretty much used to log my pregnancy and talked about my grape and orange soda cravings. After I had her, I stopped blogging for awhile and then once I got my grounding after back-to-back pregnancies and adjusting to two children, I picked it back up in 2006.

    DD:  What got you started?

Jenna: It started as a way for friends and family to stay updated on what we were doing and focused mainly on the girls. And, though I hate to talk about it, if I were to leave this world unexpectedly, I wanted the girls to have something that was documented…something from me and words that came from me so that they knew how I felt about them and what I am like as an individual and how I was as their mom.

DD:  Why do you continue blogging?  What do you get out of it?  How long do you think you’ll continue?

Jenna: I love to write and I love the people in my life. I can’t imagine combining something I love more to create something that will last longer than a distant memory you can’t remember because it isn’t written down.

DD:  Tell me a little about your blog.

Jenna: It’s a hodge podge. It’s not just all about the girls as it once was when I started it. It’s about me and what I’m doing in my life also – my biggest accomplishments and fears. Home improvements. It’s kind of random and all over the place.

DD:  Why should people read your blog?

Jenna: I’m horrible at self-promotion. Read it if you want. If you like it, keep reading.

DD:  What types of blogs do you enjoy reading?  Can you provide a list of your five favorite blogs?  Why do you like these five?

Jenna: I like all types of blogs. I can’t pick five, Dan. I know I would hurt someone’s feelings, and I would feel terrible about it.

DD:  What is the secret to happiness?

Jenna: I don’t know the answer to that, but I can tell you that the secret to MY happiness is my family, close friends, and a career that is moving in the right direction.

DD:  What is your favorite quote?

Jenna: “Always look on the brighter side of life.” – Monty Python. Not a Monty Python fan here, but heard this quote in a movie called Sliding Doors. It stuck.

DD:  What, so far, has been the happiness moment of your life?

Jenna: I have four, so can I mention all of them?

    DD:  Sure.

Jenna: The day I graduated college, my wedding day, both birth days of my girls.

DD:  What has been your biggest regret?

Jenna: I don’t believe in regrets as long as it was a learning experience. Let’s just say I have had quite a few learning experiences in my lifetime and I’ll leave it at that.

DD:  Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Jenna: Retired? C’mon LOTTO! If that doesn’t happen, I hope to be able to move up the housing chain to a house that is bigger than a bread box, there could possibly be one more child (NO I AM NOT PREGNANT) and hopefully running my own business.

DD:  Do you monitor your blog stats?

Jenna: I like to look at them, but monitor them? No. If people like to read it, that’s fine. I love to write, if only for me.

DD:  What are your favorite places in the world?

Jenna: Maui, who I will be seeing again in 2009. Our home, with all of us in it.

DD:  Tell us something most people don’t know about you.

Jenna: Since having kids, I don’t sleep as much. And I’m fine with that. But I wasn’t in the beginning.

    Daddy Dan Interviews…..Chanel Wood

On her website, Chanel Wood describes herself this way:

I’m Chanel, a Vancouver-based entrepreneur, writer, photographer, life-long student, sister, daughter and lover. I’m quirky, friendly, under twenty and insatiably curious about everything and anything. I ask a lot of questions, and look for a lot of answers. I like to help people. According to a survey my closest friends and family took, my best character trait is my ability to be empathetic. I might also be crazy, and/or violent. Maybe.

Sounds interesting, right?  Well, she is.  She’s an excellent writer and photographer and she is definitely wise beyond her years.

Here’s my interview with Chanel Wood:

Daddy Dan (DD): Tell me a little about yourself.

Chanel Wood (CW): What can I say about myself? My name is Chanel, I hail from a lovely metropolitan city in Canada and my personality is an amalgamation of many, many things. Read on to find out more?

DD: How long have you been blogging?

CW: I got started in 2001, although I must admit that I probably wouldn’t show anyone the kind of entries I wrote back then—they were all very personal… sort of “diary style”. I left the blogging scene a couple years after that for a private livejournal. In early 2007, I started the website I have now.

    DD: What got you started?

CW: Originally, I started blogging because two of my friends had blogs—I thought it was a neat idea for some reason or another and hopped on the blogwagon. (Okay, that was awful.)

DD: Why do you continue blogging? What do you get out of it? How long do you think you’ll continue?

CW: I continue blogging because it’s my creative outlet – I bring elements of my (offline) life to my blog, partially to share with others, partially to chronicle for myself. Although the tone and scope might change over the years, I can easily see myself blogging for as long as I’ll want a creative outlet—so for a long time.

DD: Tell me a little about your blog.

CW: I’d like to think that my website is an online representation of me—I like taking photos, so I post photos. I like to cook, so I post recipes. I love to discuss, so I write.

DD: Why should people read your blog?

CW: If I’ve done what I’ve intended to do … I will make you laugh and I will make you think. (Sometimes at the same time.) … And hopefully, inspire you in different ways and through different means.

DD: What types of blogs do you enjoy reading? Can you provide a list of your five favorite blogs? Why do you like these five?

CW: I read so many different types of blogs – food blogs, fashion blogs, celebrity gossip blogs (hey, not gonna lie!), photoblogs, personal blogs…

Dooce – This one is a given. As a photographer, I admire her photos. As a writer, I adore her quirky, sometimes dramatized writing style.

The Big Picture – Sort of like a news/current affairs site, but told in pictures instead of words. Some of the pictures on this blog are mind-blowing.

The Pioneer Woman – Talk about a content-rich website! She’s a photographer, a mother, a wife, a cook, and definitely a writer… which naturally makes her website very diverse and highly entertaining. Her love story, From black heels to tractor wheels is a definite must-read too.

Nonsociety – I love the idea of lifecasting, and I think each one of these girls brings something relatable (tech, fashion, dating) to the table. I’ve gotten a lot of great ideas from what they do.

Jessica Claire Photography – Jessica is one talented lady and I absolutely adore her photos. What more can I say?

DD: What are your favorite “non-blogging” activities?

CW: Ballroom dancing definitely ranks high up there. I also love reading (good old fashioned books), listening to records, cooking, baking, sewing, going out with friends, traveling, taking photos, running (or rather, training for races)… and much much more.

DD: What is the secret to happiness?

CW: Not waiting for happiness to knock on your door. I believe happiness is primarily a state of mind; you can be happy anywhere, anytime, under any circumstances if you so choose to be. Having said that, it sure can be hard sometimes—but possible, if you look for the right things in people and circumstances.

DD: What is your favorite quote?

CW: Oddly relating to the previous question… I think that my favorite quote (I collect quotes, so choosing just one is difficult!) would probably be one by Leo Rosten in which he says, “I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be happy. I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be compassionate. It is, above all to matter, to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all.”

DD: What, so far, has been the happiness moment of your life?

CW: So far, I think the happiness moment of my life was when I crossed the finish line of a 5K mock race in preparation for the 10K SunRun—it was a simple informal race, but I was running with a friend and together we fueled each other on hoping for our best time yet. When we crossed the finish line (with a brand new record), I was overcome by the most intense feeling of pure joy—which was obviously fueled by endorphins, no doubt—but I can’t truthfully say that any other moment has really quite measured up to that one.

DD: What has been your biggest regret?

CW: I can honestly say that I don’t have any regrets I hold on to—of course, like anyone, I have those “after the fact” regrets… but I do my best to make right the situation and move on. As I always try to tell myself and my friends, “you just need to let go.”

DD: Where do you see yourself in ten years?

CW: [Laughs] … This is one of the questions I hate the most, and to be totally honest I try not to think of it too much—so much can change in ten years, so I find it rather fruitless to try to picture myself in ten years when all I know is now. It’s kind of like how writers in the fifties tried to picture the future when they wrote futuristic novels—we are essentially “the future” (or close to it) of their time, but it looks nothing today like they pictured it then.

But If I have to answer this… I hope to be married, possibly with a family. Everything past that is drawing a blank for me.

DD: Do you monitor your blog stats?

CW: Definitely. I love to see where my readers are in the world and how they found my site!

DD: What are your five favorite places in the world? Why do you love them?

CW: I haven’t done enough world traveling for this to be completely accurate, but of the places I have gone, I would have to say…

Jerusalem (Israel) – Its hard to explain why this city is so lovable, but it just is. It’s rich with history wherever you go and the atmosphere is so unlike anything I’ve ever experienced anywhere else.

Caesarea (Israel) – Right on the Mediterranean sea, this place has one of the most gorgeous views I’ve ever seen.

Disneyland (California) – There is just so much I could say about Disneyland, but I’ll keep my strange loves to myself and just say this: you’re never too old!

Vancouver (British Columbia) – I might be a little (okay, a lot) biased here, but I do adore the city that I live in, even if we do get an abnormal amount of rain.

Victoria (British Columbia) – Located on Vancouver Island, just off the coast of the Mainland BC. Victoria is an incredibly cute, “artsy” city by the water.

DD: What are five things you want to do before you die?

CW: I want to go storm chasing – this has always been an interest of mine, and was only further fueled when I was in Alabama earlier this year during a tornado alert. I’d also like to see the northern lights, write a book (hopefully more than one) and have it published, visit outer space (providing “civilian” space travel is a little more time-tested and safe), and become internet famous.

DD: Tell us something most people don’t know about you.

CW: I love “old” (1940s &1950s) music; my record player gets more use than my CD player or radio.
