As I was getting ready to take Babito to bed and read him a book, I remembered that I forgot to open the doggie door for our dogs.

Not wanting to come downstairs to a doggie accident, I decided to run down and open it for them real quick. Babito was already in our bed ready for his story.

As I got up to come downstairs, Babito started to get off the bed. I told him to stay there. As I reached the stairs, I turned around to see him right behind me.

I told him that if he followed me downstairs he was going straight to bed without a book.

I ran down the stairs and opened the doggie door, and when I came back to the stairs, Babito was sitting on the bottom step.

In a stern (maybe a little TOO stern) voice I said “That’s it, no book! Get in your bed!”

Babito immediately started wailing.

Realizing I may have overdone it, I told him we could read a book. It took him a few minutes to quit whimpering.

As we read ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish’ (one of his favorites) he was being uncharacteristically quiet. If I pause while reading the book he normally loves to say the next few lines, but not tonight.

He was very hurt that I yelled at him.

When we finished the book, he got off our bed and walked to his room. I followed him to tuck him in and turn on his night light.

He got on bed and laid down with his back to me. I asked him if he wanted to give me a kiss goodnight and he said no. I said goodnight but he didn’t respond. I said “I Love You” and he didn’t respond.

I said goodnight one last time and, in a barely audible voice he said goodnight back. I left the room and I was walking down the hall he yelled “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!”

I went back into the room and he said “I love you too, Daddy.”

Now I’ll be able to sleep tonight.
