Do you give yourself a regular allowance?
My wife and I each give ourselves a $100 allowance every two weeks (on payday) to spend as we wish. If we want to buy something more expensive we must save our bi-weekly $100 up until we have enough to afford it. So far it’s worked pretty well.
On an unrelated note, I recently bought this for The Babito:

It’s the Melissa and Doug Deluxe Magnetic Responsibility Chart. It’s kind of hard to see from the picture, but it’s a chart where you put several chores and behaviors your child is responsible for. Each day they meet the chore or behavior they get to place a happy face on the chart for that day.
We haven’t started using it yet (he might be a little young for it) but the chart gave me an idea to improve myself. My idea is to identify seven things I want to start doing each day. I’ll track my progress on these seven items each day here.
My reward will be my $100 bi-weekly allowance. My allowance is $100. Dividing that by the 14 days is roughly $7 a day. Every day I do not meet one of my goals, $1 will be deducted from my allowance. I’ll donate this money to a charity.
So, what do you think of my idea? What goals should I set for myself? I need 7.
Here’s some ideas I have for the goals:
- Learn something new each day
- Teach Babito something new each day
- Perform a random act of kindness
- Make Babito laugh
- Write a blog post
- Read a book for 30 minutes
- Exercise
- ?????
Let me know what other goals might be right for me…
Let me know if you do anything like this.

I like this for the kids and the idea it sparked in you is pretty good too.
I’m not disciplined enough to do much of what you have laid out. I’d need to be much more specific. Learning something new would probably become ‘Learn a new word’. Since you like to write how about dedicating a few minutes each day to a childrens story, or several of them. Something you can enjoy with Babito and ultimately pass down to him. Just a thought. – Chuck

I’m liking that allowance idea. I’m going to try this. I’m a simple guy, and think I will have money left over at the end of 2 weeks. My wife however.. very well may be living allowance to allowance!

Fabulous idea… Other goals? Maybe drink a certain amount of water? Something “green” related? Spend time outside?
I look forward to seeing how you progress. Might steal your idea, too
