Do you give yourself a regular allowance?

My wife and I each give ourselves a $100 allowance every two weeks (on payday) to spend as we wish. If we want to buy something more expensive we must save our bi-weekly $100 up until we have enough to afford it. So far it’s worked pretty well.

On an unrelated note, I recently bought this for The Babito:

m&d chart

It’s the Melissa and Doug Deluxe Magnetic Responsibility Chart.   It’s kind of hard to see from the picture, but it’s a chart where you put several chores and behaviors your child is responsible for. Each day they meet the chore or behavior they get to place a happy face on the chart for that day.

We haven’t started using it yet (he might be a little young for it) but the chart gave me an idea to improve myself. My idea is to identify seven things I want to start doing each day. I’ll track my progress on these seven items each day here.

My reward will be my $100 bi-weekly allowance. My allowance is $100. Dividing that by the 14 days is roughly $7 a day. Every day I do not meet one of my goals, $1 will be deducted from my allowance. I’ll donate this money to a charity.

So, what do you think of my idea? What goals should I set for myself? I need 7.

Here’s some ideas I have for the goals:

  1. Learn something new each day
  2. Teach Babito something new each day
  3. Perform a random act of kindness
  4. Make Babito laugh
  5. Write a blog post
  6. Read a book for 30 minutes
  7. Exercise
  8. ?????

Let me know what other goals might be right for me…

Let me know if you do anything like this.
