I was reading an article in the Wall Street Journal, an op-ed by Karl Rove, talking about how he and President Bush have an annual contest to see who can read the most books. I thought it sounded like a really fun idea, so I’ve decided to start a 2009 book-reading contest here at Daddy Dan.
So, who’s up for it? I can keep track of everyone’s reading list here, and I’ll set up a special page where everyone can keep up with how everyone else is doing.
While the contest is just for fun, we’ll still need some ground rules:
• I’ll keep track of both number of books read and number of pages read. The number of pages read will be based on what the book’s Amazon.com page says.
• Text books and magazines are ineligible.
• You can read the same book more than once, but it will only count once in your score.
Any other rules you think I should add?
It would also be fun to have prizes for the winners. I’ll start it off with a $25 Amazon.com gift card. If you’d like to donate an additional prize, please let me know!
Please let me know in the comments or send me an e-mail at danthedaddy@gmail.com if you’re considering participating. Once I get a list of people (and get your feedback on the rules) I’ll send out an e-mail with the official rules.

Sounds fun, but I warn you, I am an avid and voracious reader…when do we start and does what we’ve read so far in 2009 count?
Looking forward to it!

We’ll start when I send out the e-mail, and yes, it starts from 1/1/09

That’s such a fun idea! I don’t read nearly as often as I could, but that’s because I’ve decided to err on the side of “way too aggressive” writing goals…lol…but hopefully it will payoff one day

I’m in. Same question as Andi, does what we’ve already read count?
This is a great idea! I’m totally pimping it out.

I’d love to play but I spend too damn much time reading blogs. And making PB&J sandwiches. And playing Uno. And tying shoes. If you have any of those type of contests, I’m totally in!

Saw this via re-tweet. Considering I’m already on my second book of the year, I think I’ll have to consider myself in!
I’m VDog’s sis, if that means anything to you. ;p

Oh, okay… I guess I can join the fun since I’ve been promoting your challenge (as long as we count pages and not books – I hardly ever finish my mostly non-fiction books.) I promise I won’t win.
My daughter, on the other hand (who runs the teen version of my blog), is drooling over that $25 Amazon gift card. Is there an age limit?

I’m IN. But I have to warn you – last year I read 74 and it was a slow year. I’m on book #4, so far.
I don’t sleep much.
I think we need a button, yo.

This is a great idea and I’d love to participate, but I don’t think there’s any way I could even begin to compete. I love reading and I miss it, but I NEVER have time to read for pleasure these days with work and school. So sad
