VH1 has issued it’s list of the top 100 songs of the 90’s. The ranking was based on an online poll.
Here’s the top 10:
- Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
- One – U2
- I Want It That Way – Backstreet Boys
- I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston
- Vogue – Madonna
- Baby Got Back – Sir Mix-A-Lot
- Baby One More Time – Britney Spears
- Waterfalls – TLC
- Losing My Religion – R.E.M.
- Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinead O’Connor
It’s sad that “I Want It That Way” was voted the third best song of an entire decade. I’m surprised MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” (#16) or Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” (#28) didn’t crack the Top 10.
There’s some really great songs (at least some of MY favorites from the 90’s) further down the list:
- Jeremy – Pearl Jam (#11)
- Under The Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers (#15)
- Jump Around – House of Pain (#24)
- Black Hole Sun – Soundgarden (#25)
- Wonderwall – Oasis (#35)
- 3 am – Matchbox 20 (#48)
- Criminal – Fiona Apple (#55)
- Mo Money Mo Problems – Notorious B.I.G. (#63)
- I’ll Be – Edwin McCain (#66)
And some really crappy/silly songs that I never want to hear again as long as I live made the list too:
- MMMBop – Hanson (#20)
- Ice Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice (#29)
- Gonna Make You Sweat – C&C Music Factory (#36)
- Good Vibrations – Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (#47)
- Believe – Cher (#74)
- Jump – Kris Kross (#75)
- I’m Too Sexy – Right Said Fred (#80)
- Achy Breaky Heart – Billy Ray Cyrus (#87)
- Rico Suave – Gerardo (#100)

haha. mo money mo problems was one of my faves! and every time i hear jump around it reminds me of the movie mrs. doubtfire.
and i wouldn’t be so surprised about the backstreet boys cracking the top 10. the 90s was all about the boy bands.

I saw this last night on VH-1…..I loved the trip back down memory lane. I must say that I was sad to see Backstreet Boys and Britney make the top ten
I also loved Criminal – Fiona Apple….I still listen to her today!

DD – I gotta disagree with you over C&C Music Factory. They rock the house down. You secretly know that. And Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch . . . HI-LARIOUS. Ok, truth time. I went to a Funky Bunch concert when I was in high school with my friends. We got to go backstage and meet him. He was a total ass, but he begged this girl in our group to stay with him in his trailer. He said he promised she’d get home ok. She was totally into it, and she cried the whole time because she kept telling him she had a boyfriend on the football team, and it wouldn’t be right. I thought the whole thing was hi-lay. Maybe I’ll take a picture of the picture Marky Mark took with me. He tried to cop a feel, but all he got was a handful of thick jean shorts.
Merry Christmas DD.

Michelle: Mo’ Money was the best. Yes, the 90’s were all about the boy bands. Which one was your favorite?
Sandy: The top 100 was determined by viewer votes, so a lot of people out there still like the Backstreet Boys and Britney….amazing. A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!
VG: Exactly
Romi: I agree with you, but apparently Leaky doesn’t.
Leaky: I secretly know nothing of the sort. Thanks for sharing your Marky Mark story. I’d love to see the picture.
Becky: They were classic crap! =)
VG: Happy New Year! I hope you finally lose that song this year.

the thing about an online poll seems a little hard to believe to me…
It weird songs like and were ranked so low on the list, while it’s surprising that many forgotten artists like C+C music factory, Snow or some good but not so famous artists like Liz Phair, Dunkan Sheik or Marcy’s playground did appear in a list that doesn’t feature any Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, Foo fighters, STP, NIN, Dave Mathews Band, Blur, RATM, Offspring
other things to mention about the list:
1.-they ranked “Time of your life” by Green day but they didn’t rank “Basket Case” which is a much bigger hit
2.-No songs by the Smashing Pumpkins, Foo fighters, STP, NIN, Dave Mathews Band were ranked
3.-”You oughtta know” is my favourite Alanis M. song, but i thought “Ironic” was a much bigger hit. wasn’t it?
4.- What happend to songs like “Runaway Train” or “Plush” or “No Rain” “Song 2″ or “prett Fly for a white guy?? ??
all of them were big?? weren’t they?

I don’t give a shit what the list says…Hanson Mmmmbop should easily be top 10. They were number one longer than any song ahead of them.
