Yes, he can be a little corny, but I really do like Joel Osteen. My wife tapes his weekly show, and depending on the topic, I’ll watch it. Some of the things he says, while simple, really hit home. He has a new book coming out on October 15th, Become A Better You (7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day), and I’ll be picking it up. Any other Joel Osteen fans out there?

I’m not making this up. A 14-year old died after being exposed to “brain-eating” amoeba at Lake Havasu. These amoeba are found worldwide and thrive in warm, standing water, usually in lakes. Read the story at Fox News here.

I thought it was great! Michael had some great lines. “I’m not superstitious, just a little stitious” was good. What was your favorite part, line, etc. What did you think of the premiere? Are you happy Jim and Pam are a couple? The bloody nipples were funny too. I’m glad that guy’s still on the show.

I’m going to start a nifty regular feature today. I’ll call it Random Thought Thursday. I’ll share my clever, outrageous, insightful (or mostly likely obvious) observations from the week. Without further ado, here we go………
- Are we really expected to believe that taxi drivers really only carry $5 in change? What do they do with the fares they collect? Do they drive back to the taxi depot after each fare and drop off the money? Do they stop at an ATM and deposit it? I think that sign on every taxi must be there to ward off the really stupid criminals among us.
- Why does the news call terrorists in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. insurgents when they set off a car bomb and kill innocent civilians and kids? They are terrorists, plain and simple.
- Are you as perplexed as I that most magazines give you free access to their articles on the internet? Why would anyone subscribe to a magazine today if you can easily read them online or print them out and read them for free?
- Lastly for this week, I hate the local news programs. Does anyone really get their news from these shows any more? The shows are really lame, to the point of being comical. Why do they have “Storm Watch” every time it starts to drizzle? Have you ever seen when they do a story about health or obesity? They always show video of fat people from the neck down or from behind or close-up belly shots. I wonder if any obese person has been watching the news and seen themselves? And what about during November sweeps. They always have “scare story promos” to get you to stay tuned to the 11 o’clock news. It’s always something like “A common everyday item that may be in your house right now is killing children. Are you children at risk? Details at 11.” It guilts you into watching. You start to get nervous thinking “What can it be? I must stay tuned.” And it ends up being something really stupid. I could go on forever about the local news.

There’s an absolutely fascinating article in this week’s issue of the New Yorker. In 1986, Clive Wearing, an eminent musician and musicologist, was struck by a brain infection that left him with one of the most devastating cases of amnesia ever recorded. The amnesia left him with a memory span of only seconds. It also deleted his memory of nearly his entire past. Due to his condition, his wife Deborah had to put him in a psychiatric hospital. One particular passage that got to me, and a link to the article, after the jump……….
